Hidden From Plain Sight
This week we formally and finally bid goodbye to the Class of 2018 as they finish their HSC exams and gather to celebrate at the Blue & White Ball. It is an event that is a long awaited and eagerly anticipated culmination for many of these young men. But we also had a reminder this week that the most important things that are learned here don’t stop when you leave Tambourine Bay and also aren’t the most important things you learn here

This week is the culmination of the academic year for the students in the Graduating class, and in many ways the consummation of their schooling lives. 245 young men, who walked into the College in over-sized khaki shorts as 10 or 12 year old boys back in 2011 and 2013, respectively, leave as men having completed the requirements for Year 12 and the standards associated with them. They have added their own distinctive chapter into the rich and unfolding history of the College and led their school with great integrity and commitment.

Dare to Disturb
Greg Dening was an Old Boy of Xavier College in Melbourne. A Jesuit for a time, he then left, and became a noted professor of history at Melbourne University. He once wrote: "A school confronts a never-to-be-resolved contradiction. It must fulfill the expectancies of those it serves, if it is to survive. It must change those expectancies, if it is to be truly educational."

I hope you young men before me, about to graduate, can sense what Dening means in that paradox.

Graduation Week
There is a special chemistry in the air when Graduation Week arrives. It is a time to acknowledge and thank the graduates for their leadership and valued contribution to school life, most of whom walked through the gates as 10 or 12 years olds in Year 5 and 7, and now leave as men. Today is one of the highlights of the school year with House Assemblies to frontload formalities, followed by the Valete Assembly, the Graduation Mass and the Graduation Dinner.
